We recently spoke with a mine site maintenance team about a simple but important question:

“If the equipment is still doing the job, how much more can we get out of it?”

It’s a good question, especially as mining operations continue to face cost pressures and look for ways to better manage total cost of ownership (TCO). Rebuilds and remanufacturing can offer a practical alternative to replacement, helping operations manage lifecycle costs while maximizing the value of existing equipment.

After more than 25 years working with mining equipment, we’ve learned that age alone doesn’t determine when a machine has reached the end of its useful life. Equipment condition, maintenance history, duty cycle, operating environment, and the machine’s role in the operation all need to be considered.

Sometimes new equipment is the right investment. Other times, a properly planned rebuild or refurbishment can return a proven asset to service, extend its useful life, and maximize the value of the investment already made.

Before adding another machine to the capital plan, it’s worth asking whether the equipment already in operation has more to give.
