The shift towards IEC 61850 and greater use of digital communication is changing how electrical equipment is manufactured and tested. While digitalisation can support shorter manufacturing lead times, it also introduces greater complexity in ensuring systems work as intended.

Tim McGarry, Manager, Live Test Area, Acrastyle Limited, believes this is making testing increasingly critical, with greater focus on configuration, communication between devices, and overall system functionality.

At 17, most people are still deciding what they want to do.

Rio decided to do two things at once.

By day, he is an Apprentice Test Engineer at Acrastyle Limited, learning from experienced engineers and working towards his Level 3 Engineering Fitter qualification. By weekends, he is wearing the England rose and taking on some of the best young rugby players in Europe.

His rugby journey actually began at 11, playing for his hometown club in Ulverston before moving to Dalton Rugby Club in pursuit of a higher level of competition. Years of hard work led to England selection at both U16 and U17 level, culminating in a memorable tour of France where he scored a hat-trick and was named Man of the Match.

But this isn't just a rugby story. It's an apprenticeship story too.

Many of our longest-serving colleagues first walked through Acrastyle's doors as apprentices. They learned from the people around them, built their skills over time, and went on to spend decades with the business. We hope Rio's engineering journey becomes one of those stories as well.

What makes his achievement remarkable isn't just the tries or the trophies, it's the balancing act. College, work and international rugby is a pretty full diary for anyone, let alone a 17-year-old. And through it all, his teammates on the shop floor have been doing what great colleagues do best: asking how the matches went, offering encouragement, and making sure he has the support to chase both ambitions.

As Rio says, "There's never any rush in life or in rugby." We couldn't agree more.

Congratulations, Rio. We are proud to be part of your journey, and we have a feeling this is only the beginning.

In a world where job-hopping is the norm, spending 47 years at one company feels almost legendary.

But at Acrastyle Limited, people tend to stay when they find work, and teams, worth staying for.

After more than four and a half decades of solving problems, mentoring colleagues, sharing wisdom, and probably knowing the business better than most of the instruction manuals, Kevan Dell has officially retired from his role as Senior Mechanical Engineer.

Over the years, generations of employees have relied on Kevan not just for his technical expertise, but for his calm presence, sharp thinking, and dependable nature. The kind of person every workplace hopes to have — and never really wants to lose.

While we are not entirely convinced he won’t still turn up with advice every now and then, one thing is certain: Kevan leaves behind an incredible legacy and a standard that will be hard to match.
