and the HPC & AI Competency Center of Iceland, in cooperation with the , will welcome representatives from Division at the Gróska Innovation House tomorrow on June 10, from 13:00–15:00, for a public engagement event focused on the Sun, the upcoming 2026 total } in Iceland, and Iceland’s growing opportunities in space science, innovation, and exploration.

The event, “Solar Eclipse Engagement: From Iceland to the Moon, the Sun, Artemis and Beyond,” will bring together researchers, students, public-sector partners, and the wider community to explore how Iceland’s scientific landscape is becoming increasingly connected to international space research. With heliophysics and the 2026 eclipse at the center, the program will also highlight Iceland’s broader role in space science and exploration, from Apollo astronaut training and planetary science informing missions to Mars, to Earth observation, remote sensing, the program, and Iceland’s international engagement through the Artemis Accords.

Setting up at ISA HQ to watch the Artemis 2 crew conduct the first lunar fly-by in 53 years ! Today also happens to be Monday, which comes from the old english Mōnandæg which is from the old norse and current Icelandic “Mánudagur” which means literally Moon-day and is in honor of the norse god , the personification of the Moon, Máni. The MÁNI program is also an acronym for the Iceland Space Agency’s Moon Analog Network of Iceland which is utlizing Iceland’s diverse set of terrestrial Analogs to support our international partners with the testing and development of innovative surface technologies, operational procedures, and the training of future crews that will lead humanities next great leap. Wishing Reid, Victor , Christine , and Jeremy an exceptional fly-by , the first set of human eyes on this region of the moon’s far side , cannot wait to see the photos.

The Sun emitted four strong solar flares on Feb 1. and Feb. 2. The flares peaked at 7:33 a.m. ET, 6:37 p.m. ET, and 7:36 p.m. ET on Feb. 1, and 3:14 a.m. ET on Feb. 2. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory captured images of the events, which were classified as X1.0, X8.1, X2.8, and X1.6: https://go.nasa.gov/3MlA2br

Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth’s atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground. However — when intense enough — they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS & communications signals travel.

Til hamingju með afmælið Jeremy Hansen, frá Íslandi upp í tunglið 🚀🌖 🎂

From Iceland we are all wishing you and the crew of Artemis 2 god speed and safe travels on this next orbit around our Moon and on this 50th orbit around our star geimfari Hansen !

Today as Jeremy celebrates his 50th birthday he and his Artemis 2 crewmates are in isolation leading up to their launch to the Moon, the first crewed launch to the Moon in over 53 years. This launch could occur as early as this coming February 6 when their launch window opens.

Back In July / August 2024 Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen and his Artemis crewmates, , , & took part in lunar geology training in , in te remote northern Askja region.

Just as the apollo training Missions of 1965 and 1967, Iceland was specifically chosen for its icy soils resembling those anticipated on the Moon’s surface. This kind of training is crucial in preparing astronauts for missions to the Moon.
