Why do we still love this job after another roof, another switchboard and another very early start?

Because no two homes are quite the same.

One day we are working through a tricky string layout. The next, we are fitting a battery into a space that looked impossible at the site visit. Then there is that moment when everything is tested, the system comes online and the monitoring starts showing power from the roof.

I also get to watch our team grow. Apprentices become confident. Good habits become automatic. Someone spots a better cable route, asks the right question or helps a mate finish safely.

And we meet some genuinely good clients and partner companies along the way.

It is physical work, technical work and people work all at once. That is probably why it never gets boring.

Thanks to everyone who trusts Grenz Electrical with a part of their home or project.

SigenergyAn established St Albans home with a very modern energy setup.

For this Grenz Electrical project, we installed a Longi 475W array with a Sigenergy 10kW energy controller, SigenStor battery storage and a Sigenergy Gateway.

That gave the home solar generation, stored energy and a properly integrated backup pathway—not three separate boxes hoping to cooperate.

The roof layout used multiple strings, while the electrical work included the protection, bonding, monitoring and switchboard integration needed to keep the system clear and serviceable.

Battery jobs demand more planning, particularly around where equipment lives and how the home behaves when the grid disappears.

Thank you to the homeowners for the trust. This is the kind of system that makes a house feel ready for what comes next.

What’s the best part of installing solar around New Zealand?

It’s not the panels.

It’s not the tech.

And it’s definitely not climbing rooftops in the middle of winter.

Honestly? It’s the people.

Time and time again, we arrive to a warm lunch, fresh baking, or just a hot coffee waiting.

Sometimes homeowners even tell us to just make ourselves at home. Those small acts of kindness mean more than you might think. After a busy morning on the roof, sitting down for a few minutes over a meal reminds us that we’re not just working on another project. We’re working with genuinely kind people who look out for others.

One of the things we love most about New Zealand is the incredible hospitality of Kiwi families. It’s something we never take for granted. To everyone who’s welcomed our team into their home, shared a meal, or simply asked how the day is going: thank you.

Your kindness doesn't go unnoticed, and we appreciate it more than you know.

We’ll keep bringing the solar... and you keep making it very hard for us to leave after lunch. Thank you, New Zealand. We’re grateful to be part of such an amazing community.

How many solar panels do you need?

Not as many as will physically fit.

I start with the power bill and the time of day the power is used. Then I look at the useful roof faces, shading, network limits, inverter capacity and anything likely to increase demand later.

A few examples:

• daytime home office: strong self-use
• electric hot water: can often be shifted into solar hours
• EV arriving next year: allow for it now
• most power used at night: consider storage or a different array size

Panel wattage matters too. Twenty modern panels may produce more than twenty older or lower-rated panels, so the count by itself tells you very little.

The right answer is a system size in kW, matched to a real load profile - not a competition to cover the roof.

Send me two bills and a roof photo and I can give you a sensible starting point.

Does solar increase the value of a home?

It can make a home more attractive - but I would never promise a fixed dollar increase.

Buyers tend to value systems they can understand and trust. That means:

• quality equipment
• tidy workmanship
• clear warranties
• complete certificates and inspection records
• monitoring that actually works
• no confusing finance or ownership arrangement attached

A badly documented system can become a question during a sale. A clean, compliant system with an organised job pack is much easier for the next owner to appreciate.

The immediate value is the power it produces while you live there. Any resale benefit should be treated as a bonus, not the whole reason for installing.

Good solar becomes part of the home. Make sure it is something you would be proud to hand over.
