How do you know if you got a quality solar installation on your roof? πŸ€”

Most people start by looking at the panels.

The truth is, almost every solar installation looks good from 20 metres away.

The real question is what it looks like up close.

Are the panels lined up properly?

Are the cables secured neatly?

Are the isolators straight?

Are the roof penetrations sealed properly?

Are the labels where they should be?

And most importantly, does the installer still answer the phone after they've been paid? πŸ˜„

A quality installation is a bit like an iceberg. The panels are the part everyone sees. The workmanship, compliance, testing, documentation, and attention to detail are the parts you don't see, but they are usually the most important.

One of my favourite tests is simple.

Stand back and look at the roof.

If one panel looks like it had a disagreement with the rest of them, start asking questions.

In all seriousness, good solar is not about making it work today. It's about making sure it still works properly years from now.

The best installations are often the ones nobody notices, because everything is tidy, straight, secure, and exactly where it should be.

And if you need binoculars to find a loose cable, we've probably done our job right πŸ˜„βš‘

Good news from the Grenz Electrical team.

We've successfully achieved our Tōtika prequalification for 2026 with a score of 79%.

Last year we scored 75%, so we're moving in the right direction. Slowly but surely, just like a toolbox that somehow keeps getting heavier every year πŸ˜„

Health and Safety is one of those things that nobody gets excited about until they need it. Then suddenly it's the most important thing on site.

The reality is that good Health and Safety isn't about paperwork, certificates, or ticking boxes. It's about making sure everyone goes home at the end of the day with the same number of fingers, toes, and brain cells they started with.

A special thank you to Qualify365 and Nick Engelmann for helping guide us through the process once again. Having knowledgeable people in your corner makes a big difference, especially when navigating the ever-growing world of compliance and prequalification requirements.

Over the past year we've continued improving our systems, training, equipment, vehicles, procedures, and overall approach to safety. There is always more to learn and always room for improvement, but that's exactly how we like it.

A big thank you to our team for embracing the process, even when it means filling out another form, attending another toolbox meeting, or listening to me explain why "Test Before Touch" isn't just a friendly suggestion.

We'll keep pushing forward because getting better never really stops.

Our goal isn't just compliance.

Our goal is making sure everyone gets home safely to their families every single day.

And maybe next year we'll crack 80% and celebrate with something more exciting than another Health & Safety meeting πŸ˜„βš‘

People often ask me what the biggest danger on a work site is for an electrician.

Most expect me to say electricity.

Some think it's working at heights.

Others think it's power tools.

The truth?

It's usually confidence.

Not the good kind. The kind that starts with, "I've been doing this for 20 years."

That's usually when everyone else takes a small step backwards πŸ˜„

Electricity doesn't care how many years you've been in the trade.

It doesn't care how many houses you've wired.

It doesn't care how many solar systems you've installed.

The moment you think you're too experienced to check something properly is the moment you become vulnerable.

That's why one of our core rules at Grenz Electrical is simple: Test Before Touch.

We check because we're professionals.

We check because we're human.

And we check because we'd all rather look slightly overcautious than slightly electrocuted.

Experience is valuable, but good habits are what get you home safely at the end of the day.

Stay safe out there, and remember, electricity has a terrible sense of humour βš‘πŸ˜„

People often ask where the time goes.

For some, work is simply something that fills the day between morning and evening. For me, it has always been a much bigger part of life than that.

The truth is, the hours seem to disappear when you genuinely enjoy what you do. One minute you're arriving on site, and the next you're packing up tools wondering where the day went.

I enjoy solar, I enjoy solving problems, and I enjoy seeing a project come together. But most of all, I enjoy helping people. Whether it's reducing power bills, improving energy independence, or simply giving someone confidence that the job has been done properly, that's the part that makes the work meaningful.

Every installation is different, every customer is different, and every day brings a new challenge. Maybe that's why it never feels repetitive.

I am grateful for the team I work alongside, the customers who trust us, and the opportunity to do something I genuinely enjoy every day.

When you enjoy what you do, work stops feeling like something you have to do and starts feeling like something you're fortunate to be part of.

Sometimes we look up and realise the sun is already setting.

Those are usually the days when we know we gave the job everything we had. Not because we were rushing to finish, but because we wanted to make sure every detail was right, every cable was tidy, every panel was sitting exactly where it should be, and every part of the installation met the standard we expect from ourselves.

The truth is, our work is never just about installing solar.

It's about looking after someone's home, helping families reduce their power costs, building something that will perform for years to come, and leaving a site better than we found it.

And while we're still on the roof or packing up tools at the end of the day, our own families are waiting for us at home. They do it with patience and understanding because they know we're not staying late for the sake of it. They know we're doing our best to do the job properly.

I'm grateful for the team that shares those values, and I'm grateful for the families behind them who support what we do.

At the end of the day, good work takes effort, but work done properly is always worth it.
