140 tonnes of scaffold, 80 tonnes of structural steel, One operating store.
A major seismic milestone has been achieved at Gilmours Central, Palmerston North.
Our team erected 140 tonnes of specially engineered scaffold inside the fully operational store to install 80 tonnes of high-level structural steel, all while keeping the business open over a 24/7 operation
This milestone forms part of a two-year development project that includes:
• A 1,000m² extension
• New ambient storage, freezer and chiller facilities
• A 400m² rear canopy
• Seismic strengthening of the existing building
While the new extension was completed in early 2025, it was designed from the outset to integrate with the building's seismic upgrade, ensuring the entire project works together as one long-term solution.
A special thank you to our partnering contractors for their expertise, communication and practical approach throughout the project, and to the Gilmours Central team for their support, patience and flexibility while work continued around a live trading environment.
With Phase 1 complete, Phase 2 is now underway, and the finish line is in sight.
