Let’s talk about trucks for a minute.
When we first started out, we had an old ’85 Ford.
And let me tell you, it was definitely not the ideal landscaping truck. 😂
It was jacked way up in the air, and we did some pretty ridiculous things trying to wheelbarrow loads of material that we had dug out BY HAND up into the back of that thing.
But it was what we had.
When we stepped out on our own, it was scary. We had no financial backing. We didn’t have money sitting in the bank. We had a bunch of kids at home depending on us.
But my wife kept encouraging me and telling me it was time. She believed we could do it.
So we started with one old truck, some wheelbarrows, some shovels, and a whole lot of grit and determination.
And we worked.
Over the years, we’ve tried incredibly hard to charge fair prices, keep our overhead low, and reinvest what we make back into the business.
We still don’t have fancy new trucks. Most of ours have plenty of miles on them. But we take care of them, and every single one was worked for.
We’ve bought them one at a time, with cash, when we could afford them.
Today we have six trucks.
They aren’t showpieces. They’re workhorses, and each one has a purpose.
The dump truck moves dirt, rock, debris and materials.
The bigger trucks handle our heavy trailers and equipment.
The Excursion can tow while hauling the crew.
The flatbed carries materials and supplies.
Every truck was added because the work demanded it and because, little by little, we were finally able to afford it.
Every couple of weeks, I’ll run into someone at the store or at one of our suppliers who says:
“I see your trucks all over town!”
I don’t think people realize how much that means to me.
Because I remember when there was only one.
I remember loading that old Ford by hand.
I remember wondering if this crazy idea of building our own company was actually going to work.
So when I see our trucks heading in different directions in the morning, I don’t see six trucks.
I see years of hard physical labor.
I see thousands of hours.
I see jobs completed.
I see mistakes we learned from.
I see clients who trusted us with their homes.
I see my wife believing in me when taking that first step felt terrifying.
And I see the guys who show up every day and work their tails off to uphold the standard we’ve built this company around.
We didn’t get here easily.
And we certainly didn’t get here alone.
We also have no desire to turn BL Landscapes into some giant franchise or massive company. That was never the dream.
We want to stay small enough to remain personally involved. We want to build specialty projects that challenge us creatively. We want to know our clients. And most importantly, we want to protect the quality of our work.
Quality Without Compromise.
We’re right where we want to be.
So if you’re just starting your own business with an old truck, a few tools, and a dream that feels way bigger than your bank account...
Keep going.
Keep working.
Keep learning.
Keep investing back into yourself.
Take care of what you have.
And never sacrifice the quality of your work just to grow faster.
