Thinking about solar? Going bigger usually pays off ☀️

Extra panels are the cheapest part of the system, about $1,700 a kW on EECA's prices, and they pay for themselves even if you export most of what they make.

The limits are your roof, your budget and your lines company's export limit.

Plug-in solar is getting closer 🔌☀️

Small panels you plug straight into a wall socket, handy for renters and apartments. They can't be sold here yet, but safety rules are being written, and National, Labour and the Greens all want them legal.

An EV has powered an Auckland family's home through dinner time 🔌🏠

In a Genesis trial, the house used more than 16kWh over three evening hours, and less than 1kWh of it came from the grid. The car did the rest.

It's not something most of us can set up at home yet, but it's getting closer. Here's where it's at: https://www.cogo.co/post/can-your-ev-power-your-house-nz?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=2026-w44

Getting off gas? Do it in this order:

1. Hot water and heating, when they're due for replacing
2. Cooking last
3. Get the meter removed, because the daily charge (about $830 a year) keeps coming until it's gone

Consumer NZ puts the whole switch at around $1,700 a year saved for a home on mains gas.

NZ's gas reserves are at their lowest in 20 years of records, and the Government is lining up gas imports through Port Taranaki, aiming for winter 2028.

Got gas at home? No need to rip anything out. Plan to switch each appliance when it's due anyway, hot water and heating first.

A heat pump costs about a quarter as much to run as a bar or column heater, on EECA's numbers. It moves heat in from outside instead of making it, so it puts out about three times more heat than the power it uses.

Plug-in heaters are still fine for small rooms. For the living room, a heat pump is where the savings are.
