Usually, we are building walls, but let’s break one today instead.

At Bluestem Remodeling, we believe that everyone deserves a home where they can thrive and be themselves. But the world is not always what we want it to be, and for many people, that reality looks very different.

65 countries still criminalize consensual same-sex relationships.

7 countries still retain the death penalty as the legally prescribed punishment for these acts.

Only 38 countries and regions have legalized same-sex marriage out of 193 UN member states.

While we cannot help everyone facing these realities, we want to share these numbers as a reminder of why Pride month remains so important not only as a reason for celebration but also for action and change for better.

At Bluestem, we believe a business is only as strong as the community it serves. We believe our work should actively add value to the world around us, rather than just extracting from it.

For us, taking that responsibility seriously happens in two main ways: our environmental footprint and our community impact.

Inside your home, this means eco-friendly, energy efficient home remodeling whenever possible. We are here to guide your project, not dictate it. We’ll lay out the environmentally friendly options and explain the pros and cons, but you always make the final call—unless you specifically ask us to take the wheel! Outside the home, social responsibility means actually showing up for our Twin Cities neighbors.

We support organizations doing vital work on the ground, including:

Thank you to everyone who visited us during the MSP Home Tour! It was delightful to see all the familiar faces and familiarize the new ones.

A special shoutout to those who joined Bluestem owner Timothy Ferraro-Hauck for his presentation, "Additions That Truly Belong: No More 'Box' on the Back." We really enjoyed the conversations about how to design seamless additions that respect a home's original character, rather than just tacking on a mismatched room.

As example we spoke about a story where we helped our homeowners to successfully petition the city so they could build a much-needed accessible entryway while saving a magnificent 150-year-old oak tree in their yard.

This Minnetonka project hitting the MSP Home Tour soon, and the transformation on this one is huge.

🏡 The setup:
A cozy 1948 cottage with a massive 3/4-acre yard the homeowners had spent years working on.

❓The issue?
You couldn’t actually get to the yard from the house. Entertaining meant walking guests straight through the garage. Plus, they needed room for overnight family, a place to hang coats that wasn’t a basement stairwell, and a garage that actually protected cars from mice.

So we completely changed the footprint. The old, tiny garage was swapped out for a bright sunroom with a fireplace. We added a spacious two-car garage and connected everything with a brand new mudroom (heated floors included). Now, massive sliding doors open straight to the outside, so carrying dinner into the yard is actually easy.

Today’s Earth Day inspired us. We’ve been spending some time looking at our own work through a slightly different lens.

For us at Bluestem, a sustainable remodel is not just all about the high-tech gadgets we can add at the end, but also about the invisible choices we can make at the start. We think about the "embodied carbon" of a project—basically, the environmental footprint of the materials themselves.

One of the best ways we’ve found to keep that footprint low is by keeping things local where it makes sense. By sourcing from our neighbors and suppliers right here in the Twin Cities, we aren't just supporting the Minnesota economy; we’re cutting out a massive amount of transportation emissions before the materials even reach your driveway.
