🐕🧪 What goes into the recipe for a hound dog?

Start with a generous helping of curiosity, add plenty of persistence, a healthy scoop of independence, lots of affection and heaps of smelling capability.

The end product: a very motivated hound dog!

Of course, there's a reason many hounds share some of these characteristic behaviours.

Hound breeds were historically selected to help humans locate and pursue game, either by following scent or using sight and speed. Over generations, selection for traits such as persistence, focus, exploration and the ability to work with some independence from their handler helped shape the dogs we know today.

But hounds are also often wonderfully affectionate companions, with plenty of personality and a natural curiosity about the world around them. ❤️🐾

And while breed history and genetics can influence behavioural tendencies, they don't write the whole personality. Individual genetics, socialisation, training, environment and life experience all contribute to the dog in front of you.

So there may be a general recipe for a hound…

…but every dog adds their own flavour. 🐕❤️

🐾🧬 When kidney disease is written in the genes, knowing their status matters.

Familial Nephropathy (FN) is an inherited disorder affecting the kidneys. In affected dogs, abnormalities of type IV collagen disrupt the structure and function of the kidney's glomerular basement membrane, leading to progressive kidney damage and, ultimately, renal failure.

FN is particularly well documented in English Cocker Spaniels, where a disease-causing variant in the COL4A4 gene is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. The same variant has also been identified in Welsh Springer Spaniels, while a different COL4A4 variant causing hereditary nephropathy has been described in English Springer Spaniels.

Because the condition is recessive, carriers can appear perfectly healthy while still passing the disease-associated variant to their offspring. Genetic screening allows breeders to know a dog's status and make informed mating decisions - helping to reduce the risk of producing affected puppies while retaining healthy carriers within the breeding population.

🎨🐴 Ever wondered how your horse got its unique colours and patterns?

Spoiler alert: DNA held the paintbrush. 🧬

Horse coat colour may look incredibly diverse, but underneath all those beautiful shades and patterns, the basic recipe starts with just two pigments:

🖤 Eumelanin — black pigment
🧡 Pheomelanin — red/yellow pigment

From there, genetics starts flipping different swithes.

First up is MC1R at the E locus, which helps determine whether black pigment can be produced in the coat.

Then, if black pigment is available, ASIP at the Agouti locus helps decide where that black pigment appears - giving us the difference between horses such as black and bay.

And then the rest of the genetic paintbox gets involved. 🎨😂

Dilution, greying and pattern genes can modify those base colours further, helping create the incredible variety we see in horses - from palominos and greys to striking spotted coats!

So while we might simply see a beautiful coat, a geneticist sees:

Pigment + genes + inheritance + a surprising amount of molecular interior decorating. 😂🧬

Every horse comes with its own genetic palette. 🐴✨

🧡🐱 Ginger by nature. Gremlin by choice.

Today we're celebrating the glorious orange cats who bring a little extra sunshine, and a suspicious amount of chaos into our lives.

Whether they're stealing your seat, launching themselves into situations they absolutely did not think through, yelling for dinner 45 minutes early or simply looking magnificent in a patch of sunlight, ginger cats certainly know how to make themselves memorable.

And because we can't resist a little genetics… 🧬

A cat's orange colouring is X-linked, which is why ginger cats are much more commonly male! Females have two X chromosomes and generally need to inherit the orange-associated variant on both to be fully ginger, while males usually have just one X - so one copy can be enough to turn the whole cat orange. 🧡

The gremlin behaviour, however, remains scientifically unconfirmed. 😼

🐱❤️ How do you speak cat?

You don't need to understand every meow - although we're fairly certain “MEEEEOW” at 5 a.m. translates roughly to “I am starving and nobody in this household has ever fed me.” 😂

Cats communicate with us constantly. Through their eyes, their posture, their movements and the little choices they make about when to come closer - or when they'd rather have some space.

Sometimes speaking their language simply means learning to listen.

❤️ Keep your voice gentle and match their energy.
👃 Offer a hand and let them investigate.
🐾 Call them over, but let them decide whether to come.

🐱🌯 DNA testing? First, make a purrito!

Collecting a DNA sample from your cat doesn't need to be complicated. A simple buccal (cheek) swab can provide us with the DNA we need - and a towel can make the whole process a little easier for everyone involved!

Here's how to collect a good sample:

🍽️ Start with an empty mouth
Your cat should not eat or receive treats for at least 2 hours before sampling. This helps reduce the chance of food contaminating the sample.

🌯 Make your purrito
Gently wrap your cat in a towel, leaving their head exposed. This can help keep paws safely contained while you collect the sample.

🧬 Swab the cheek
Place the swab between the cheek and gums and rub firmly against the inside of the cheek for 20–30 seconds.

🐾 Collect two swabs per cat
We recommend submitting 2 swabs for each animal, giving us a backup should an additional DNA extraction be needed.

💨 Let them air-dry
Allow both swabs to dry completely before packaging them. Once dry, place the swabs from each cat into their own envelope to help prevent cross-contamination between animals.

🏷️ Label, label, label!
Clearly label each envelope with the animal's details and make sure they correspond with the information provided on your test request form.

And once the science is done...

🧡🖤 Ever wondered why tortoiseshell cats look like nature couldn't pick a colour?

The answer involves one of genetics' coolest tricks: X-chromosome inactivation! 🧬

The gene controlling orange versus non-orange coat colour in cats is located on the X chromosome. Female cats usually have two X chromosomes, which means they can inherit an orange-associated version on one X and a non-orange version on the other.

Early in development, each cell randomly switches off one of those X chromosomes. Some groups of cells keep the orange-associated X active, while others keep the non-orange X active!

The result? 🧡 + 🖤 = those beautiful, randomly arranged patches that make every tortie's coat unique!

This also explains why almost all tortoiseshell cats are female. Males normally have only one X chromosome, so they generally can't express both colours in this way. Rare male torties can occur through unusual genetic circumstances, such as having an extra X chromosome (XXY).

So that gorgeous patchwork coat isn't just pretty...
