🐴 Muscle twitching, weakness or sudden collapse in horses? It could be genetic.

Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis (HYPP) is an inherited muscle disorder caused by a mutation in the SCN4A gene. Affected horses may experience episodes of muscle twitching, weakness, prolapse of the third eyelid, or, in severe cases, collapse.

HYPP is most commonly seen in American Quarter Horses, but it can also occur in American Paint Horses, Appaloosas, and other breeds with Quarter Horse bloodlines.

A simple DNA test can identify whether a horse carries the HYPP mutation, providing valuable information for owners and breeders. Genetic testing supports informed breeding decisions and helps reduce the prevalence of this inherited condition in future generations.

Hereditary Nasal Parakeratosis (HNPK) is an inherited condition that affects the nose, causing excessive crusting, dryness and cracking. Because HNPK is inherited, puppies are only affected when they inherit the genetic mutation from both parents.

Fortunately, DNA testing makes it possible to identify dogs carrying the HNPK mutation. This allows breeders to make informed breeding decisions that reduce the risk of producing affected puppies while maintaining healthy breeding lines.

Cocoa is a recessive coat colour variant found in French Bulldogs. This means a dog must inherit two copies of the cocoa variant—one from each parent—to express the coat colour. Dogs carrying only one copy will not display the cocoa phenotype but can still pass the variant on to their offspring.

Genetic testing allows breeders to determine whether a dog is:
🧬 Clear (no cocoa variant detected)
🧬 A carrier (one copy of the cocoa variant)
🧬 Cocoa (two copies of the cocoa variant)

Understanding your dog's genetic status can help you make informed breeding decisions and better predict the colours that may occur in future litters.

The dogs we love today help shape the Boerboels of tomorrow.

UnistelPETS and Stellenbosch University are seeking Boerboels from across South Africa to participate in a research study investigating inherited health conditions within the breed.

We are currently recruiting:

✔ Healthy Boerboels (age 2+ years)
✔ Elbow Dysplasia (ED)
✔ Vaginal Hyperplasia (VH)

Participation includes a free blood sampling kit, courier collection and DNA genotyping.
Submitting the form does not obligate you to participate in the study. It simply allows the research team to contact you with further information.

🐴 Understanding PSSM1 in Horses

Not all performance issues are training-related… sometimes, it’s genetic. 🧬

Polysaccharide Storage Myopathy Type 1 (PSSM1) is a hereditary muscle disorder that affects how horses store and use energy. This leads to abnormal glycogen build-up in the muscles, which can cause discomfort and reduced performance.

Common symptoms include:
🐎 Muscle stiffness (especially after rest)
🐎 Reluctance to move or poor performance
🐎 Tying-up episodes (painful muscle cramping)
🐎 Sweating and trembling during exercise

Commonly affected breeds:
🐴 Quarter Horse
🐴 Paint Horse
🐴 Appaloosa
🐴 Draft Horse (e.g., Percheron, Belgian Draft)

Because PSSM1 is inherited in a dominant manner, even one copy of the mutation can affect a horse.
