👩‍⚕️ Canadian and US scientists say death and rehospitalisation rates among hospitalised patients are lower when patients have a female rather than a male doctor. The team looked at outcomes for nearly a million adult inpatients in Ontario, Canada, and found people treated by female doctors were less likely to die within 30 days, and less likely to end up back in hospital, than those treated by male doctors. The differences were modest, but the pattern held up under statistical testing, they say. For patients with a female doctor, 12.3% died within 30 days, compared with 13.7% among those with a male doctor. And 18.6% of patients with a female doctor ended up back in hospital, compared with 18.9% of those with a male doctor. The reasons for the differences remain mysterious, and the study authors suggest further work should look into this.

🍔 A lack of menu labelling and a focus on promotions and deals could be influencing Australians to make unhealthy choices when getting food delivered, according to Adelaide University, SAHMRI and The George Institute for Global Health researchers. The team set up 12 online focus groups totalling 112 Australian adults to explore in-depth the way we make choices when scrolling meal delivery apps. The researchers say overall, the focus groups said they predominantly used food apps for treats and convenience without considering healthy choices, and they were mostly influenced by the best deals they could find while scrolling. Focus group participants were generally not interested in seeing nutritional information when scrolling a meal app, the researchers say, but as these apps grow in popularity and usage, the team say it will be important to consider ways to better regulate them to encourage healthier choices.

🖱️ There is little to no evidence that ergonomic office setups can reduce pain for workers who spend their days at a computer or a factory station, according to an Australian-led Cochrane Review. The review pooled the results of 20 studies totalling 2,478 participants looking at the impact of ergonomic adaptations for workers with arm, neck or shoulder complaints - including 13 in offices and seven in factories. Overall, the researchers say these adaptations were not linked to improvement in pain, function, well-being, recovery or the number of sick days used, compared to no treatment, usual care for their pain, placebo treatment or exercise. There is little high-quality, unbiased evidence available on the topic of improving neck, shoulder and arm problems in the workplace, the researchers conclude.

🧴 The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has announced that they are progressing with the development of reforms to strengthen sunscreen regulation in Australia. According to the TGA, the reforms are intended to strengthen consumer confidence in sunscreen performance and ensure that sunscreen sponsors and manufacturers understand their regulatory obligations. The TGA says its reforms will include strengthening testing requirements, developing quality requirements for specific ingredients, clarifying expectations and responsibilities of manufacturers, and ensuring there is a clear distinction between sunscreens that have the primary purpose of UV protection and cosmetic sunscreens.

🌿 The number of Australians aged under 25 with prescriptions for medicinal cannabis products has risen in recent years, according to The University of Melbourne researchers who raise concerns about the evidence behind many of these decisions. The researchers collected data on 52,419 medical cannabis product approvals for people aged 25 and under since 2016, and say prescriptions have increased over time, accelerating further since 2021. 71% of prescriptions were for people aged 20-25, while 10% were for under 15s - with younger children more commonly prescribed cannabidiol-dominant products. Anxiety and chronic pain were the most common conditions the products were prescribed to treat, and the researchers warn there is limited evidence on cannabis to treat these conditions, and unanswered questions on how cannabis impacts brain development at a young age.

💉 An mRNA-based cancer vaccine has been shown to reduce the risk of death or of the cancer coming back by 42%. The trial, led by the 2024 Australian of the Year, Professor Georgina Long, included 1137 patients whose melanoma had been surgically removed, but who were at very high risk of it returning. The trial compared treatment with the cancer vaccine, which is personalised to target each patient's specific cancer, alongside immunotherapy, versus treatment with immunotherapy alone. The cancer vaccine helps the immune system find and kill melanoma cancer cells, so the cancer is less likely to return or to spread to an advanced stage. The results are being presented at the ESMO (European Society for Medical Oncology) Congress in Spain on Sunday.
