Plenty of sites buy electricity off the grid and burn separate fuel for heat. Cogeneration does both jobs at once, from a single fuel source.

That's the whole idea behind combined heat and power. One engine generates electricity on site, and the heat that would otherwise be lost gets captured and used for hot water, process heat or steam. Two outputs, one fuel, far less waste.

It's why the technology keeps turning up at wastewater plants, abattoirs and food factories, anywhere with steady heat and power demand under one roof.

One unit. More than 80% of a council's electricity.

At the Hyland Highway Landfill, a 900kW unit runs on landfill gas the site captures itself, generating around 7,000MWh of renewable electricity a year. That covers over 80% of Latrobe City Council's needs and has saved the council roughly $900,000 annually.

Gas that would otherwise be flared or vented, quietly powering most of a council.

The grid isn't the bottleneck anymore. The wait to connect to it is.

Yesterday we ran a webinar with 2G's Dr Tamer Turna on powering data centres before the grid catches up.

The number that stuck: a large grid connection can take 2 to 5 years, especially for projects above 50MW. A modular on-site gas plant can be running in 6 to 18 months. That gap is years of a finished facility sitting dark and unable to earn.

Instead of building the data centre and then waiting on grid capacity, you build the power alongside it and start operating early. When the grid arrives, the same plant moves to peak shaving, backup and grid support, so it isn't a stranded asset.

On-site power isn't a workaround. It's how you stop the grid deciding when your site comes online.

Precision German-engineered hardware, running on gas that most sites treat as a waste problem.

This is inside a 2G biogas engine. The gas feeding it comes from the site's own organic waste streams, captured and cleaned instead of flared or vented. The engine turns it into electricity and heat, both used on site.

The cleaner the engineering looks, the easier it is to forget what's actually running through it.

Powering a remote mine usually means diesel.

Not this one. We've secured a 10MW gas power project for a remote mining operation.

Moving away from diesel can make a significant difference commercially, operationally, and environmentally. LNG provides a competitive cost of energy and a more stable fuel cost base, while reducing CO₂ emissions and significantly lowering local pollutants such as particulate matter and SOx.

The system will utilise German engineered 2G AVUS 2000e units, powered by four MTU 20V4000 engines, delivering 10MW of continuous power and scheduled for delivery in 2026.

With demand for gas generation continuing to exceed available supply, we're quickly becoming the provider of choice for reliable gas power in the Australian mining market.

Engine and generator swap complete at JBS Corowa.

One of three 2G Avus 500 plus units on site came out after 60,000 hours running on biogas. The replacement is now in and the site is back to generating its own power from the gas it produces on-site. The old unit heads to Germany for a full factory rebuild and a second life.

The install is only the start. Keeping these units running for the long haul is the real job, through scheduled refurbishments, swaps, and technicians who know them inside out.

See those green units? They run on gas the site produces itself.

This is Kilcoy Global Foods, the first certified carbon-neutral large-scale beef processor in Australia. Those are 2G CHP units, running on biogas captured from the site's own processing waste.

One fuel source, generating electricity and recovering heat for the operations next door. No gas trucked in, no drawing the bulk of it from the grid.

What's a 1MW gas engine doing at a cold storage facility? Eventually, making the cold.

This one has just landed at NewCold's site in Truganina, VIC. In these photos it's still braced inside its transport container, a fair way from running. But the plan behind it is worth a look.

NewCold runs advanced cold chain logistics for food and pharmaceutical supply chains. Cold storage is energy hungry, and this site's demand is growing.

EvoET has been awarded the EPC contract for a 2G 1MW natural gas CHP system that generates on-site electricity and thermal energy from a single fuel source. It's expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by more than 2,200 tonnes each year while cutting the site's reliance on the grid.

The engine is trigeneration-ready. A future stage will add an ammonia absorption chiller that turns recovered heat into sub-zero cooling for the cold store. Electricity, heat and cooling from one fuel source.

It's also future-fuel capable, built to run on biomethane, LNG or hydrogen as they become viable.

More to come as installation gets underway.
