In recognition of Black Business Month, the latest Crossroads blog takes us to historic 4th Avenue North, once the economic heart of Black Birmingham and home to generations of entrepreneurs who built businesses, created opportunities, and strengthened their community. 🏙️✨

As the Crossroads project continues to take shape, the vision for 4th Avenue looks toward the future while honoring that legacy. Streetscape improvements, public art, wayfinding, and other enhancements are designed to help support a new generation of businesses while sharing the stories that make this corridor so significant.

Giving back is one of the ways we help build stronger communities. 🤝

Today, members of our team spent time volunteering in the kitchen at Firehouse Ministries, helping prepare and serve lunch for individuals experiencing homelessness in our community.

Firehouse Ministries has been serving Birmingham since 1983, providing emergency shelter, nutritious meals, and life-changing support services that help people rebuild stability, dignity, and hope. Their work makes a meaningful difference every day, and we're grateful for the opportunity to lend a hand alongside their dedicated staff and volunteers.

How do cities intentionally create pathways to opportunity? This opening conversation of Day 1 of the Economic Mobility by Design Summit explored how policy, place-based investment, and cross-sector collaboration can shape more equitable economic outcomes.

Through a Birmingham lens, leaders from the City of Birmingham, Business Alliance, and Convention & Visitors Bureau discussed how information infrastructure, strategic investment, and community-centered development can help build neighborhoods where residents and businesses have the opportunity to thrive. 🌱
